It’s October 2017 and we’re working on an amazing project with blind sitar master Baluji Shrivastav, funded by Unlimited – the arts body who support projects by disabled artists. Baluji also heads the UK’s only blind ensemble of musicians, the Inner Vision Orchestra, some members of which who’ve also taken part in our Orchestra of Samples project, including Baluji himself. We’ve worked with Baluji a number of times and he’s always been fascinated by what we do, and earlier this year he asked if we could be involved in his new project Antardrishti, a project on the subject of ‘inner vision’.
One of Spanish radio’s most listened to electronic music shows Atmósfera on Spain’s Radio 3, presented by Elena Gómez, invited Addictive TV to present Orchestra of Samples to it’s listeners. We were asked to record links introducing tracks from the album, which they then cut together. The broadcast date was 24th September 2017.
WOMAD 2017 was simply fantastic! We performed on the Bowers & Wilkins stage to a wonderful capacity crowd and even did a cheeky encore cutting up and remixing Seu Jorge who was playing the main stage.
While there we were interviewed on Radio WOMAD 87.7FM, interview below alongside tracks from the album. Big thanks to the WOMAD press team. Tracks from Orchestra of Samples played: Hangman, Beachcoma and Rapscallion.
Summer 2017 and we’re halfway through the Orchestra of Samples tour! So time to round up some of the interviews and album reviews over recent weeks. Having kicked-off the tour in Hull as part of Hull – City of Culture 2017, here’s us on local BBC radio making fools of ourselves…
August 2017’s UK issue of DJ Magazine is now out, featuring a two-page interview with Addictive TV about Orchestra of Samples… they asked us questions not many others have before! Scanned PDF of the article is below…
As Midge Ure from Ultravox once famously sang “ohhhhh Vienna”… well, what a beautiful city. We hadn’t been for quite a few years, but last week we were in Vienna, performing Orchestra of Samples at the Playground Festival there, we were joined on stage by percussionist Simon Neuwirth, who really knew how to get rhythms out of his djembe!
“The most impressive aspect of this project is that the duo strictly refused to alter any of the recordings. This means no time stretching or pitch alteration” – SONGLINES. June 2017’s issue of Songlines magazine featured a great article about us and Orchestra of Samples in their ‘introducing section’ – click here to read a scanned PDF of the article (it’ll open in another window), but considering where you’re actually reading this, then the following is possibly the best quote…
Orchestra of Samples tee-shirts are ready! We’ve teamed up with our pals at THTC – The Hemp Trading Company – who’ve printed some fantastic organic cotton tees with Anna Alcock’s beautiful Orchestra of Samples album artwork! Get your’s here direct from THTC, different sizes are available.
“a unique technology-driven audio-visual experience” Factor Magazine. The rather cool technology website Factor Magazine just did an interview with us about Orchestra of Samples ahead of the tour. Love the opening quote: “Duo Addictive TV begin touring their Orchestra of Samples project this week, 200 musicians from around the world will be joining them. But thanks to sophisticated technology
Yes, it’s no secret we’re finally releasing an album of Orchestra of Samples! In the last six months we’ve let out little snippets of news bit by bit, but now we can tell everyone that the release date is 2nd June 2017 for CD, vinyl and digital.
Early January 2017 and we were performing Orchestra of Samples in Colombia, in the beautiful South American tropical coastal city of Cartagena for a special event organised by the Lux Festival. The event was held…
We were asked to perform Orchestra of Samples in Colombia’s coastal city of Cartagena in early January 2017 and having known a number of very talented Colombians in the UK and France, the huge South American country was…
Releasing Orchestra of Samples meant the selection of chosen tracks from the project needed mixing / engineering differently from the live show. The !K7 label introduced us to French producer Jérôme Caron (aka Blackjoy), who’s produced artists including singer and actress
One of the occasions in Orchestra of Samples where lyrics have been especially written for a track created from improvised samples, Joe Publik – who’s travelled almost as much as we have – instantly understood and… connected with the project and it was great working with him.
Time to record some more vocals! Last year in East London we supported afrobeat group Yaaba Funk and their friends, including the incredible trumpet player Byron Wallen and singer Helen McDonald.
We first saw South African artist Anna Alcock’s beautiful artwork in 2014 in an art exhibition at her Inky Cuttlefish Studios in East London. We immediately thought her style of artwork would be great for an Orchestra of Samples album cover.
It’s not often you get asked to perform in a cathedral!
This year, events at Coventry’s Festival of Imagineers took place in the ruins of the old Coventry Cathedral, heavily bombed during Word War 2. We were scheduled to perform Orchestra of Samples outdoors in the ruins but due to rain the festival had to move many of the days events inside the new cathedral right next door. Alejandro de Valera, our long time French guitarist, came over from Paris to join us on this one, playing his self-built fretless guitar.
Summer 2016 and we performed Orchestra of Samples in the UK city of Leicester for the Journeys Festival, who’d introduced us to Iranian percussionist, composer and producer Arian Sadr, who performed the show with us. So given a…
May 2016 and we were in China for some dates, including performing at the opening of the GMIC16, the Global Mobile Internet Conference, in (quite incredibly) the Bird’s Nest Olympic Stadium in Beijing (watch the video below) and at Club Tango, also in the capital.
In July 2015 we headed to Poland to perform Orchestra of Samples at the Visegrad Wave Festival, which is also known as Festiwal Z Wiejskiego Podwórza (and roughly translates as the countryside or rural yard festival). It takes place in the beautiful town of Czeremcha in East Poland…,
June 2015 saw us play at the Sonidos Liquidos festival in Lanzarote, in the Spanish Canary Islands. While there we were introduced to Toñín Corujo, who plays timple (pronoucned timp-lay) – a traditional Canarian small guitar-like instrument from the ukulele family.
Awesome awesome night! Always great to play on home turf, not just the UK but the good old East End of London! Guesting with us were members of afrobeat/world/jazz/funk band Yaaba Funk – both percussionists Clive Wales and Paul Brett and the superb trumpet player Byron Wallen, often cited as one of the best trumpeters in the World.
Well, what a fantastc review from Cultured Vultures! Click here to go to the article… but a few choice extracts below…
“I’ve been to a lot of live events and seen and heard some fairly unique things… Nothing could prepare me for Orchestra of Samples though.”
An inspirational and innovative musical force to so many, including ourselves, Stereolab’s front woman Laetitia Sadier was a natural choice to approach to be part of Orchestra of Samples and working with her was a joy.
